Chapter 9

Alfie

“You’re sure you don’t mind?” I asked Liam for the fourth or fifth time. I was on a vacation with my friends, and I was blowing them off again.

“It’s fine, seriously.” Liam finished packing a few more beers into the soft-sided cooler. “Irene! Rory! You ready?”

“Almost!” Irene shouted back from her bedroom. “Gotta make sure you don’t look cuter than me!”

Liam laughed. I saw what Irene meant, though—Liam looked great, in short cutoffs to show off his tanned, muscular legs.

He rolled his eyes as he zipped up the cooler. “She’s convinced she’s going to find her soulmate on this trip. She says it’s not fair that you should, too.”

“Not you?”

Liam stuck his tongue out in faux-disgust. “No thanks. I already spend all my time in the city dealing with irritating alphas.”

“All right, all right. Thanks, though, for being understanding about how much time I’m spending with Drew. It means a lot.”

“He seems nice. Plus, watching fireworks on the beach isn’t exactly boring for us. We’ll meet you at Buckley’s afterward.”

Outside, the familiar rumble of the truck engine sounded. I couldn’t hold back my smile. “There’s my ride.”

Liam waved a hand dismissively at me. “Get going. You kids have fun and be safe! You know what I mean…”

I flushed, sputtering a response as I hurried out the front door.

I’d missed Drew’s wolf—missed it more than I was willing to admit, even to myself. It was such a unique experience to be with a shifter, a loss I hadn’t realized would hurt so badly when I left Crescent Cove behind. Keeping shifters a secret from other humans wasn’t as hard as I’d worried it would be, but sometimes I wished there was someone I could talk to who understood the deep bonds between humans and animals—and how painful it was when it ended.

God. Would it be even more agonizing when I left again?

“Hey.” Drew flashed me a gorgeous wolfish grin as he leaned over the console to push open the passenger side door.

I climbed in and greeted him with a brief kiss.

He took me in like he’d seen me for the first time, and I flushed from the attention.

“Orchards?” he asked.

I nodded. “Our spot.”

Drew pulled out of the driveway and drove toward the western orchards, where we’d spend so many evenings messing around as high schoolers. The drive was quiet but relaxed, and the anticipation between us was palpable. It made me feel young again, carefree in a way I hadn’t felt for years.

Night was rapidly approaching as Drew parked the truck in the small gravel lot outside the orchard. The breeze was cool, smelling of salt and sweet apples as it blew through the orchard. Drew led me into the orchard proper, where we were surrounded by the apple trees, enclosed by them, hidden from the rest of the world. That was the most incredible thing about Crescent Cove—being here made me feel like I was hidden away. Safe from all the chaos and noise of the city. Here in the orchard, we were the only two people in the world.
